| Description | NFL pass attempts, 2006-2025 seasons (regular season and playoffs), one row per throw: 366,274 throws by 616 passers. id = passer (GSIS id); item = target zone, depth by air yards (behind the line, short 0-9, medium 10-19, deep 20+) crossed with direction (left, middle, right); resp = 1 if completed. Quarterbacks choose where to throw, so completion rates mix passing skill with target selection; exact air yards in trial_airyards. trial_ columns also carry interception flag, targeted receiver id, down, distance to go, field position, shotgun, no-huddle, QB hit, season, playoff, game id, game clock, home/away, score margin and roof. Sacks, spikes and two-point tries excluded; throwaways count as incompletions. Real-data counterpart to the simulated nbashots_sim. |

This codebook is reconstructed by the IRW from the IRW data standard and the script that built it, nflverse_passes.R. It is our best reading, not the source’s own codebook, and it may contain mistakes. Where the two disagree, the source data are the authority. If you find an error, please tell us.
