About this table

DescriptionNFL field goal and extra point attempts, 1999-2025 seasons (regular season and playoffs), one row per kick: 61,267 kicks by NFL kickers. id = kicker (GSIS id); item = kind of kick (extra_point, or field goal distance band fg_18_29, fg_30_39, fg_40_49, fg_50_plus); resp = 1 if made/good, 0 if missed, failed or blocked. Coaches decide when to attempt a field goal and send stronger kickers out for longer ones, so make rates mix kicker skill with kick selection; exact distance in trial_dist. trial_ columns also carry blocked flag, season, playoff, game id, game clock, home/away, score margin, roof, surface, temperature and wind. Real-data counterpart to the simulated nbashots_sim.

Codebook

This codebook is reconstructed by the IRW from the IRW data standard and the script that built it, nflverse_kicks.R. It is our best reading, not the source’s own codebook, and it may contain mistakes. Where the two disagree, the source data are the authority. If you find an error, please tell us.
