2,310 rated or chosen profiles from 2,310 respondents, in up to 1 tasks of 1 profile varying on 2 attributes.

One of 2 tables from the same source; this one is the vignette table. The others are listed under Related tables.

About this table

Description2,310 US adults (quota online sample, 2021) each read one vignette of a congressional candidate, 'Michael [surname]', whose ethnic identity (9 levels: six Asian origins, English, Nigerian, Mexican) and career background (organizer or restaurant owner) were randomized; outcomes are three agree-disagree ratings.

Randomization restrictionsyes (stated by the source): surname, origin, ethnic roots and pan-ethnic identity are one linked factor (Suppl. Table 8); the ethnicity drawn depends on the respondent's group (Asian respondents: same origin / different Asian origin / non-Asian candidate; non-Asian respondents: same ethnicity / Asian / different ethnicity), so level shares differ by respondent group (English, Nigerian, Mexican far more frequent than each Asian origin)
Task orderinferred from row order
Profile positioninferred from row order

Because the attribute levels were not randomized independently, an estimator has to account for the restriction; a plain difference in means across levels can mislead. Task order or profile position was rebuilt from row order; analyses of position or task order should leave it out.

Outcomes:

ratingMichael [surname] is the kind of candidate that understands the political issues that matter to me. (Do you agree or disagree with the following statements?) [rating, 0 (Strongly disagree) to 4 (Strongly agree)]
rating_more_like_himI would like to see more people like Michael [surname] in Congress. [rating, 0 (Strongly disagree) to 4 (Strongly agree)]
rating_represent_wellIf he won, Michael [surname] would represent my district well in Congress. [rating, 0 (Strongly disagree) to 4 (Strongly agree)]
