1,717 rated or chosen profiles from 1,717 respondents, in up to 1 tasks of 1 profile varying on 6 attributes.

About this table

DescriptionSpanish pre-service elementary teachers (education students at 20 sampled universities, 2023, n = 1,717) each assessed one fictional 6th-grader from a full 2^7 factorial: student name (gender x Spanish/Moroccan origin), father's email (notary vs painter), subjects failed, behaviour, essay quality and an essay sentence signalling cultural capital; outcomes are the essay grade, grade-retention recommendation, academic-track expectations and perceived parental support.

Randomization restrictionsyes (stated by the source): full factorial of 7 binary factors (128 vignettes); one vignette per respondent; vignettes rated by 4-24 respondents (vignette_n), assignment probabilities not stated. Student name and father's email both show the family's ethnicity (one factor), so the surnames always match (García with David.Garcia, Salhi with Mohamed.Salhi)

Because the attribute levels were not randomized independently, an estimator has to account for the restriction; a plain difference in means across levels can mislead.

Outcomes:

ratingWhat grade from 1 to 10 (including decimal points) would you give to the essay considering its syntactic structure, orthography, vocabulary, and creativity? (translated) [rating, 1 (1) to 10 (10)]
rating_expectationsConsidering the information in the student's file and the grade you assigned him/her in the essay, do you think it is likely that this student will reach the upper-secondary academic track? (translated) [rating, 0 (not at all likely to happen) to 10 (very likely)]
rating_parental_supportRespondent's perception of the student's parental support (paraphrase) [rating, 0 (unknown) to 10 (unknown)]
rating_retentionConsidering the information in the student's file, the grade you assigned him/her in the essay and that he/she has not repeated a grade before, do you think this student should repeat 6th grade? (translated) [rating, 0 (he/she should never repeat 6th grade) to 10 (he/she should definitely repeat 6th grade)]
